The Effects of Essential Oil Inhalation on the Stress and Sympathetic Nerve Activity

Abstract
This study utilized a nonequivalent control group pretest posttest design in order to compare the effects of essential oil (EO) on Stress and sympathetic nerve activity after an exposure to stressors. The adults without any diagnosed disease are volunteered and enrolled through a recruitment advertisement to December of 2013 as the subjects of this study. The data were collected by convenient sampling of experimental group of 17 and control group of 15 were finally selected to meet the requirements to be this research subjects. The collection of the data for this research was approved by Institutional Review Board (IRB) beforehand. Stressor was university final exams. Stress Index was significantly lower in the EO inhalation group than control group. However, it did not show significant differences in sympathetic nerve activity. The inhalation of aromatherapy essential oil was effective on reducing of the stress.
